Floral Park, once known as East Hinsdale, got its name in the mid 1870s from prominent land owner John Lewis Childs, who was the originator of the first nationally known seed catalog. To promote the horticultural industry, he named the local streets after flowers and renamed the area Floral Park. The local post office and Long Island Railroad bought in, and a name was born. Throughout the 1870s, tiny villages and farms were the main inhabitants of the town. By 1903 there were 200 acres of Childs' flower beds in Floral Park, and the volume of his mail order business put the local post office in a class with bigger towns like Boston, Chicago and Baltimore.
