MINEOLA

 

MINEOLA was named after an Algonquin Indian Chief, Miniolagamika, 
meaning "pleasant place or village", and later shortened to Mineola.  The Village of Mineola is located in Nassau County, New York.  It is located in both the Town of North Hempstead and the Town of Hempstead.
 

Mineola is the home to Winthrop Memorial Hospital which was founded in 1896 by local physicians and residents, and was Long Island's first voluntary hospital.

Nearby Roosevelt Field was the site of Charles Lindbergh's historic flight.  He took off at 7:52 am on May 20, 1927 and landed in Paris thirty-three hours later becoming the first person to complete a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. 

Mineola is neighbored by the villages of Garden City, New Hyde Park and Westbury.

Mineola is served by three School Districts: East Williston, Carle Place and Mineola, but the marjority of Mineola is served by the Mineola Union Free School District.  

The village of Mineola has a land area of 1.9 miles.  It is surrounded by the villages of New Hyde Park, Garden City and Westbury.  

Mineola has a central railroad station on the Long Island Railroad with an adjacent bus station and is a short commute to mid-town Manhattan.

The Portugese community in Mineola is well known, with businesses and restaurants common throughout the neighborhood.  


Winthrop University Hospital is located in Mineola and was Long Island's first voluntary hospital.  Today Wintrop is a nationally-recognized, award-winning hospital and in 2004 was ranked among the Top 5 percent of Acute-Care Hospitals in the Country.
