FLORAL PARK

Floral Park is located on Long Island, New York, and is an incorporated Village in Nassau County.  Floral Park is located in both the towns of North Hempstead and the Town of Hempstead.

John Lewis Childs arrived in East Hinsdale in 1874 to start a seed and bulb business.  He bought the land around the Hinsdale Post Office and renamed the area Floral Park, naming the area Floral Park, naming the local streets after flowers.  Floral Park became part of Nassau County in 1899 and the Village was incorporated in 1908 with Childs as President.

The government of the Village is mayor-council, comprised of the mayor and four member village board.
  

Floral Park has it's own Police Force with 2 lieutenants, 6 sergeants, 2 detectives and 25 police offices, commanded by the police commissioner.    

The Volunteer Fire Department of Floral Park has one chief and four assistant chiefs.

The two Political Parties of Floral Park are the Citizens Party and the Unity Party.

There are 33 parks of various sizes located in the village of Floral Park.  One of these is a full recreation park which includes 5 baseball fields, a roller hockey rink, two handball courts, a full-size pool and kiddie pool.  Residents may join the recreation center, at which membership and identification are required.

Floral Park is served by two high schools. Floral Park Memorial High School and Sewahnaka High School are both part of the Sewahnaka Central High School District  (which also includes schools in New Hyde Park, Franklin Square and Elmont.  The three elementary schools in Floral Park are Floral Park-Bellerose Elementary School, John Lewis Childs Elementary School and Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic School.

The Gateway and the Floral Park Dispatch are the two Floral Park newspapers.

The Floral Park station on the Long Island Railroad's Hempstead line is between the Bellerose station to the west and the Stewart Manor station to the east.

The most distinctive feature of Floral Park are the trees and flowers everywhere.
